Police: "Because she's a teacher, it's a crime."
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Friday afternoon 34 year old Kinsley Wentzky, an English teacher at Dreher High School, was arrested and charged with Sexual Battery with a Student.
According to police, Wentzky is accused of having sexual intercourse with a 17 year old male student. An alleged relationship, police say, may have started back in the Spring of 2011.
However, some details of the alleged relationship have not been determined.
"When did it begin, how long did it happen and how many times did both parties engage in sexual activity," says Jennifer Timmons, Public Information Officer for the Columbia Police Department.
Wentzky is still employed at the at the school but is on administrative leave tonight and has been since January 2, 2013, says a spokesperson for Richland County School District One.
The spokesperson also tells ABC Columbia News school officials were notified of the alleged acts on December 27, 2012 over the Christmas holiday.
The following statement, in part, was released to ABC Columbia News, Friday afternoon: "Richland One does not tolerate sexual misconduct or sexual harassment and any employee found in violation of the law and board policy as such faces termination of employment." - Karen York, Director of Communications for Richland County School District One.
The student, police say, is believed to have consented to the relationship.
"Even though he was 17, which is of legal consenting age for sexual intercourse, because she was a school official that makes it illegal," says Timmons.
Wentzky faces up to 5 years in prison if convicted, but that may not be her only concern. ABC Columbia News has confirmed with the Forest Acres Police Department that they have an investigation of their own, which could involve another student.
Police did not confirm the age of the student, but we are told Forest Acres police were just notified within the past few days of the alleged relationship.
Charges on their end could be filed as early as next week.
