COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- The Midlands man accused of shooting and killing a Richland County K-9 officer, pleaded guilty Monday.

24 year old Maurice McCreary was sentenced to 35 years for five counts of Attempted Murder and the Killing of a Police Dog.

Fargo's partner and handler, Warren Cavanagh attended Monday's plea hearing and sentencing.

"There was a statement that was made, which is you're not going to get away with shooting at the police officers, you're not going to get away with killing a police dog. But, on the other side of things, there was an apology given by him and his family speaking," says Cavanagh

Deputies say McCreary was involved in an armed robbery in mid-December of 2011. He allegedly ran from deputies and in the process fired at them multiple times, hitting K-9 Fargo.

K-9 Fargo later died at an area veterinarian hospital.
