Man arrested for alleged dog-fighting operation
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- More charges could soon come for a man arrested in connection with a reported dog fighting bust in Kershaw County.
Deputies say the man charged, who first claimed to be 36 year old Robert Capatrick Wright, is actually 42 year old Burton Mincey.
Authorities say Mincey, who is already charged with 20 counts of ill treatment of animals and 20 counts of owning an animal for the purpose of fighting, could now face charges for using someone else's identity.
Mincey was arrested Tuesday afternoon after deputies say they uncovered a dog fighting ring at his home on Barron Dekalb Road in Camden.
"This whole animal fighting thing, cock fighting, dog-fighting it's a very underground operation more so than drugs," says Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews.
Matthews says deputies found the dogs tied to chains and living in deplorable conditions after going to the home to question Mincey.
"While they were talking to him, they were able to observe what they quickly determined to be some cruelty to these animals and possibly a dog fighting operation," says Matthews.
Deputies later returned with help and, one by one, the dogs were taken out.
"The thing about dogs is they have nobody to go to," says Matthews.
In all twelve adult pit bulls and eight puppies were removed from the home.
We got a first glimpse of them Wednesday afternoon at the Walter Crowe Animal Shelter, where they were taken for treatment.
"It's just absolutely ridiculous to me, ridiculous," says Sharon Jones, Director of the Walter Crowe Animal Shelter.
Jones says to her this crime is heart wrenching.
"I think they're sick, I think anyone that can stand there and watch two dogs and each other and end up in a bloodbath, they're sick to watch it, they're sick to be involved," says Jones.
For many of the dogs involved, we're told the road to a full recovery could be long.
Meanwhile, Mincey also faces charges for a narcotics violation and a stolen pistol, say officials.
