Murder for Hire Investigation
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- "I can only imagine that in his mind, his life is ruined," says Sheriff Jim Matthews, Kershaw County.
Sheriff Matthews believes that may be a reason why 25 year old Brian Sharpe may have tried to have an 8 year old girl and her mother killed.
"He's got to know that he's facing some serious prison time if convicted," says Sheriff Matthews
Last Friday, Sharpe was arrested for allegedly molesting the child.
"I think that when you are in a situation like that, your life flashes before your eyes and you know you are pretty much done," says Sheriff Matthews.
Matthews says Sharpe then turned to another inmate to talk about his case.
"He admitted to touching the girl and he stated that he messed up," says Sheriff Matthews.
Matthews says Sharpe went on to ask the inmate to make sure the girl nor her mother made it to court.
"And he says if you can't do it, do you think you can get somebody else to do it?," says Sheriff Matthews.
The inmate later told jail staff.
Matthews says the news scared the girl's mom.
"Terrified, they are very afraid," says Sheriff Matthews.
So much so, Matthews says she asked him for advice about getting a gun.
"We thought it would be a good idea for her to take a concealed weapons permit class, didn't necessarily have to get a permit to have a gun in her home, but it gives you a little bit of training and also gives you some legal updates on what you can and cannot do when using deadly force against somebody," says Sheriff Matthews.
Crandall Sims reporting, "Sharp is being held on the child molestation charges, he will have another bond hearing in the morning on the solicitation to commit murder charges. Sheriff Matthews says they will go for two counts on that, one for the child and one for her mother.
