NAACP President Fights Charges

By Rochelle Dean

A cascade of misunderstandings brought on by a diabetic attack. That's how NAACP President, Lonnie Randolph, Jr.'s Attorney, Joe McCullogh describes the reason for the charges against his client.

According to Columbia police Chief Ruben Santiago, Randolph was picking up dry cleaning at Tripp's on Harden street when authorities received a call about a disturbance.

Chief Santiago says responding officers had no idea who Dr. Randolph was and were forced to subdue him when police say he began resisting arrest. This, after an employee from the business claimed Randolph would not pay for his items and refused to leave the store.

Police Chief Santiago and City manager Teresa Wilson both responded to the scene, citing their knowledge of Randolph's medical condition, police say they were not immediately able to identify.

While Chief Santiago says he believes the charges against Randolph will be dismissed once it goes to court, Dr. Randolph's attorney says he and his client have not discussed possible charges against the Columbia Police Department. According to McCullogh, his main focus is seeing that the charges against his client are dismissed.

A court date has not yet been set. Stay with ABC Columbia News for the latest developments in this case.

That's certainly his right; however, if the law is fooled into 'no punishment for actions', then shame, shame on them!
