January 1st is not only the first day of the new year, but it's also the first day some new laws take effect throughout the state.

The highly debated Voter ID Law goes into effect today. During the next election all South Carolina residents who wish to cast their ballots at the polls must produce a government issued photo id. Including: a Military id, Drivers license, Passport, State Issued ID card, or a voter registration card with a photo.

While the issue was heavily criticized, state officials say it will give poll workers a chance to verify that you really are who you say you are when you come to the polls.

Also going into effect this year is the Penny Tax. An Ailing transit system in need of funding come May will increase taxes by 1 cent to make billions of dollars over the next 20 years. That money will help with needed repairs to roads and highways, expand and upgrade the transit system and help build bike and walking space throughout Richland County.
