ROME (WOLO) -- Breaking this Wednesday afternoon, white smoke is bellowing from the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, signaling the election of a new Pope.

The white smoke came out around just after 7:00 p.m. in Rome, that's about 2:00 p.m. in the United States.

Thousands gathered outside of the Sistine Chapel could be seen cheering as bells rang out.

Cardinal Bergoglio of Argentina became the first Latin American Pope. He will go by the name Pope Francis, I. He is also the first Pontiff from outside Europe in more than a millenium.

It took 5 votes to elect Pope Francis, I.
