COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Emergency contraception has been available by prescription only to those under 17 and was for sale only behind pharmacy counters until now.

The Food and Drug Administration approving Tuesday the over the counter purchase of the Plan-B contraception sparks much debate.

"We make it very convenient to kill our children. We don't value life. We say we do," Columbia resident, Keith Cook.

"If somebody's 15 years old and old enough to have sex, they're old enough to make a decision about having a child or not," said passerby Keith Lyon.

Plan-B, also known has as the abortion pill or morning after pill, was available by prescription only to those under 17 and had to be purchased from behind the pharmacy counter. But, jut just yesterday, the FDA decided it is now okay for Plan-B to be sold over the counter to those 15 years old and older. No prescription or permission needed. It's a step in the right direction, says CEO for the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, Forrest Alton.

"There is no research at all that suggests increasing access to contraception for young people is going to make them more likely to have sex."

However, board member with Daybreak Crisis Pregnancy Center, Dave Wilson, says the issue is not about contraception, or pro-life versus pro-choice. it's about young women's health.

"Putting a 15 year old on a hormonal therapy, which is what this is, can have long term effects in her life physically."

The one thing all sides agree on is that sex education should begin at home before politics or the federal government get involved.
