SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- A 3-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after his uncle says the boy was shot while the two were fleeing bullets in Sumter County.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis says the boy's uncle told authorities the shooting happened at around 4 p.m. Sunday.

The uncle said they were shot at by someone in a vehicle following theirs. He told investigators he pulled over, grabbed the boy and starting running. That's when the boy was hit by a bullet in his side.

Authorities are still investigating. Capt. Allen Dailey says the boy is still in the hospital but is improving.
