RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WOLO) - There's a developing story out of Richland County Friday morning.

Deputies say a victim was robbed in the 5,000 block of Monticello Road in Columbia.

Police responded to the scene where a chase ensued between officers and the suspect. Deputies say the suspect fired shots at them, striking a K9 officer multiple times.

The sheriff's department indicates the K9 did bite the suspect in the upper body, and that is when the suspect fired shots.

The K9 was listed in critical condition following the incident and was later pronounced dead, according to deputies. They identified the dog as K9 officer Fargo.

Another officer injured himself when trying to jump over a fence. He's recovering at the hospital.

Police do have a suspect in custody at this time but are not releasing the individual's name. They were searching for the person responsible most of the morning.

Six schools in the area delayed the start of classes because of the search. They included:

-Eau Claire High School
-Heyward Gibbes Middle School
-Arden Elementary School
-Hyatt Park Elementary School
-E.E. Taylor Elementary School
-Alcorn Middle School

Helicopters were assisting in the search.

Several other local law enforcement agencies were also helping with the case, including the Columbia Police Department. It issued the following statement on its official Facebook page:

"Our heartfelt condolences to the Richland County Sheriff's Department after K9 Deputy Fargo was shot and killed in the line of duty. Our thoughts are with Fargo's handler and all those who loved him. K9 officers and deputies are loyal, brave companions to not only their handlers but the communities in which they serve. Fargo, we all salute you."
