COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Ten minutes after 10 o'clock Saturday night, Forest Acres Police say, a driver hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Two Notch Road and Pine Belt Road and then took off.

An officer later drove up on the scene.

"The individual was lying in the roadway, EMS was called, he was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead at the hospital," sasy Lieutenant Bryant Hinson, Forest Acres Police Department.

Hinson says officers have combed the area working to solve the case, but they need your help.

"We spoke to many people out in the area and they've indicated there was a gentleman on a bicycle who saw it, was yelling what he had seen, and of course took off. There's also a female that has been telling people what she had seen," says Hinson

Investigators have been unable to find either of those individuals, though surveillance video from the area may help.

"It is dark, so. We actually have him walking across the roadway, but as he gets away from the BP station, it gets darker because you don't have the lights of the BP station," says Hinson.

That video has not been released. A person of interest has been identified, but their name has not been released.

Crandall Sims reporting,"Lieutenant Hinson tells me had the driver stopped here Saturday night, there may not have been any charges filed. But, he says, because they took off they are now facing hit and run involving death and more."

According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, the person killed was 46 year old Charles Leroy Brown.

Now police need your help to identify his killer.

"We all have loved ones and if this were to have happened to them, you would want closure. You wouldn't want someone to be harmed and know that, that person who did that just drove away with no regard for that person," says Hinson.

We're also told the car involved may have front end damage, possibly a busted headlight.

Investigators say that car is believed to have been in the Gaston, Swansea area in the days following the accident.
