Ravenel Bridge elevators aren't working well

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Officials say the four elevators in the towers of the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston are working, but aren't reliable.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/10aY0V6 ) that one of its photographers hoped to use the elevators to get to the top of the bridge to take pictures of the Cooper River Bridge Run next weekend.

But the Department of Transportation told the newspaper the elevators are functioning, but aren't reliable.

Specialized Engineering Products Ltd. Built the elevators. A company executive says they were fixed two years ago, but the DOT never called them back to do maintenance needed at least every six months. The elevators have to move around bends instead of going straight up.

The elevators were repaired several years ago after a lawmaker got stuck in one.
