CAYCE, S.C. (AP) _ South Carolina Electric & Gas says it will close six of its coal-fired power generators by the end of 2018.
The plan was filed Wednesday with state regulators. SCE&G says the units range in age from 45 to 57 years old and are the company's oldest and smallest coal-fired units.
SCE&G says it would cost the company too much to keep the old units environmentally sound. Some of the units will be shut down completely, while others will be converted to natural gas.
SCE&G and state-owned utility Santee Cooper will jointly operate two new nuclear reactors now under construction at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station. Those units are expected to both be up and running in 2018.
