KINGSTREE, S.C. (AP) _ A man who drove away and then later ran from officers at a Williamsburg County checkpoint has died after being shocked four times with a stun gun.

Authorities said 29-year-old Carl Ballard stopped at the checkpoint around 11 p.m. Monday, but sped away after deputies shined a flashlight into the van.

After a short chase, investigators say Ballard stopped the van and ran. Deputies chasing him shocked him with a Taser four times, but he kept getting up and running.

After he was arrested and handcuffed, a trooper drove him to the hospital. Authorities say Ballard was not breathing when they arrived and couldn't be resuscitated.

Ballard had no criminal record and authorities don't know why he was avoiding police.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating Ballard's death.
