WESTMINSTER, S.C. (AP) -- The State Law Enforcement Division has been asked to investigate the Westminster Police Department.

Westminster officials have asked for a review of suspected criminal activity in the department.

City attorney Scott Sprouse says the request for a review comes after the resignation of Police Chief Scott Bannister on July 16. Sprouse says interim police chief Mike Crenshaw and city administrator David Smith have been reviewing police department operations.

Sprouse says based on those reviews, SLED has been asked to investigate the department.

Bannister had been police chief for 11 years.
