GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his girlfriend and her mother in plea deal that prosecutors say was offered when an investigator in the case was arrested.

Michael Crane pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter Monday. He had been charged with murder in the beating deaths of his 26-year-old girlfriend Allison Cross and her mother, 56-year-old Jane Lanser.

Authorities say Crane beat the women with a hammer after going to buy drugs with his girlfriend in August 2011. Police were called after Lanser failed to show up at work. Officers found Crane inside the Simpsonville home with the bloody bodies wrapped in a comforter.

Investigator Ralph Bobo was charged with tampering with evidence in an unrelated case.
