COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- "They're worth it," says Melissa Schneck, shopper.

Spending is up for Father's Day 2012, that's according to the Naitonal Retail Federation.

Some Midlands shoppers aren't surprised.

"No, No people don't seem to quit spending," says Laura Keith, shopper.

"No, actually it seems like everything is getting better," says Dayna Ducote, shopper.

Others are.

"Economy," says Schneck

The National Retail Federation estimates the average shopper will spend $117.14 on Dad this year.

"That's a lot to spend on an occassion like this I think," says Schneck.

"I think think it's nice to acknowledge him with something you know, whether it's cooking him a meal or a card," says Tyler Culbertson, shopper.

Sporting itmes top this year's list.

"We are looking for the perfect golf balls that we found on an advertisement on TV," says Culbertson.

"The Nike Golf Outfit," says Keith.

"I actually got him some workout clothes, he's been hitting the gym pretty hard," says Ducote.

Crandall Sims reporting, "If your Dad isn't in to sports or the outdoors, there's always electronics, starting with his cellphone."

That's right, apps are popular this year.

If your Dad likes to build or fix things, try the IHandy Carpenter app for the iPhone. It's basically a toolbox within a phone, with 5 built-in tools.

Having a cookout for Father's Day? Try the Webers on the Grill App for the iPhone, iPad and Android. You'll have access to over 300 recipes. It will even help Dad with the grocery list for those recipes.

Two other options, gift cards and clothing, those are still as popular as ever.

So whether it's a new golf club, shirt or a computer, a gift from the kids.

"My boyfriend and I have dogs and so for Father's day he's like their Father so I'm getting him stuff from the dogs," says Ducote.

Or the pets, is sure to make Dad happy and the cash registers ring.

Father's Day is June 17, 2012.
