Anti-drunken driving group plans Statehouse event

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving are planning a visit to the Statehouse to support a bill requiring many people convicted of drunken driving to have a special device placed on their cars to see if they have been drinking.

The organization plans a news conference Monday morning to call on legislators to pass Emma's Law.

The proposal would require all repeat driving under the influence offenders and anyone who had a blood-alcohol content of 0.12 percent or higher to put an ignition interlock on their vehicle for at least six months.

The device tests a driver's breath and won't start the car if it detects alcohol.

MADD will also bring cars equipped with the devices to the Statehouse lawn.
