Losing candidate protests Lowcountry Senate race

By Eric Weisfeld

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) _ A Republican challenger for a Lowcountry state Senate seat won by incumbent Democrat Clementa Pinckney is contesting this month's election.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/U04yEf ) that Republican Leilani Bessinger wants the State Election Commission to overturn Pinckney's victory because he doesn't live in District 45.
In her protest, Bessinger says the Ridgeland address Pinckney put on his voter registration card is owned by someone else.
The Election Commission will hear the protest sometime in the next month.
Pinckney did not respond to a phone message. He has been in the state Senate since 2001 after serving four years in the state House.
The district covers parts of Beaufort, Charleston, Hampton, Jasper, Colleton and Allendale counties.
