(WOLO) LANCASTER, S.C., -- Officials say a man sought by South Carolina police for questioning after two shootings is dead by his own hand.

Police say 48-year-old Sammy Lee Baskins Jr. of Lancaster committed suicide as officers tried to make find him Saturday. Police say they were searching for Baskins for the shooting of two women just minutes apart. Police believe the shootings were related and that Baskins and the victims knew each other.

Police say in one case a 56-year-old woman was shot multiple times. Then a 28-year-old woman was shot once at close range while she was holding a small child.

The child was not hurt. Both women were taken by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Lancaster Police Capt. Scott Grant says they are in serious condition.
