Ship Temporarily Grounds Off Sullivans Island
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ A large cargo ship coming into the Port of Charleston became temporarily grounded off Sullivans Island but was later freed without incident.
South Carolina State Ports Authority spokeswoman Blair Boldizar says the HR Recommendation, a 430-foot long ship, was coming into the Columbus Street Terminal Tuesday evening when it lost power and grounded in soft sand off Sullivans Island at the harbor entrance.
The vessel remained grounded overnight although the harbor remained open.
Tugs were able to free the vessel during high tide on Wednesday morning and it then continued on under its own power into port.
Boldizar says there were no injuries or environmental damage.
