SC--Starbase Students

By Alicia Barnes

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) _ A program providing science and math training for students at the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station and 75 other bases nationwide has survived attempts to cut the programs from the federal budget.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the U.S. Senate rejected an attempt by Arizona Sen. John McCain to cut funding for the Starbase program.

The program provides laboratory lessons and projects in science, technology, engineering and math to elementary and middle school students nationwide.

Retired Marine Col. Bob Semmler says nearly 13,000 Beaufort County fifth-graders have taken part in the Starbase program at the Air Station the past 13 years.

He says many of those students went on to study technology in college or enrolled in the military.
