GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ Authorities say a suspect has been shot and killed following a confrontation with officers in the parking lot of the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center.

The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. Monday.

Police say an officer was walking to his car when a man approached him in a threatening manner with what appeared to be a weapon. Investigators say a sheriff's deputy in his patrol car stepped out to help the officer. They say the officer and the deputy fired when the man refused to put the object down. It's been recovered but police have not said what it is.

The suspect was 31-year-old Wesley Kyle Swilling of Mauldin.

The officer and deputy are on administrative leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.
