Sanford Announces Run for Office
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Runaway spending in Government, that's the reason Mark Sanford gave for his return to politics.
Sanford made the announcement Wednesday, just days after his ex-wife Jenny Sanford announced she would not run for the seat.
"I'm not running. I have no interest in running. The idea of killing myself to run for a seat for the privilege if serving in a dysfunctional body under John Boehner when I have an eighth grader at home, just really doesn't make sense to me," says Jenny Sanford.
The Sanfords are no strangers to the political spotlight. In 2009, then Governor Sanford admitted to cheating on his wife after leaving the state to see his Argentine lover.
The Sanfords later divorced. Mark Sanford is now engaged to the woman at the center of the affair.
Yet, it's that political past that will likely follow Sanford into this run for office.
The seat Sanford is running for is familiar to him, it was his from 1995-2001. He stepped down to honor a term limit pledge.
Two years later, he would take office as governor and while there he cut $1 billion in deficit and debt.
ABC Columbia News has also confirmed today that Sanford did speak with his ex-wife Jenny Sanford about her potential run for the state's open District 1 seat before he announced his run for office. A spokesperson tells us that he told her if she was going to run, he would not.
