Update: Deputy Shoots Elderly Man

By Eric Weisfeld

Columbia, SC (WOLO)-A York County deputy who shot a 70-year-old man reaching for his cane during a traffic stop last month broke down in tears as other officers arrived.
The sheriff's office release dashboard camera video of the stop Wednesday. It shows Bobby Canipe (kah-NYP') getting out of his truck and reaching for a cane on a dark highway.
Deputy Terrance Knox ordered him to ``drop the gun'' then almost immediately fired several shots, hitting Canipe once. Knox then almost as quickly seemed to realize Canipe had a cane, then cursed and rushed to help.
Sheriff Bruce Bryant says after watching the video he still thinks the officer did the right thing.
The shooting is still under investigation.

This is so sad. This man was just trying to get his cane. I don't understand cops having all these accidents hurting innocent people. This stuff is making it hard to trust cops. I know the cop had to protect himself just in case something was up but.... Take out the mace and taser before the gun sometimes.

Yes, I realize the article said it was dark, and, I'm sure, that it would make a single officer very nervous, but a spotlight would have illuminated the situation. But officers have to be able to take the time to be right. They can protect themselves enough to not let this happen again. Wonder what the gentleman was being pulled over for. Also, how is Mr. Canipe?
