Charleston County Spending $420k on Closed Schools

By Alicia Barnes

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ Charleston County school officials are spending more than $420,000 a year to maintain five closed schools.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the schools were closed four years ago and officials were not sure what they wanted to do with the buildings. Only one of the schools is being used now.

The costs include utilities, insurance, maintenance, grounds care and security. The schools include the former Charlestowne Academy, Fraser Elementary, McClellanville Middle and Schroder Middle schools.

Brentwood Middle School was closed but is now being used.

The school district's finance chief Mike Bobby says there will be no quick decision on what to do with the old buildings.
