CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ Charleston wants to make sure its colorful history is told correctly, so police went undercover a few months back and fined a bicycle rickshaw driver for giving an illegal tour.

The Post and Courier reports the sting went down in September but came to light only recently.

Police dressed as tourists hired rickshaws operated by three different companies. They said one driver gave an illegal tour and fined him more than $1,000.

City ordinances require only city-licensed guides, such as those on carriages or walking tours, can provide tours and talk about the history of the city and its sites.

Police say Historic District residents complained rickshaw drivers were giving history lessons and doing laps along the Battery. Rickshaws, like taxis, are supposed to go from point to point.
