Identity Theft Unit Takes Thousands of Calls

A new identity theft unit in South Carolina has taken over 3,000 calls from concerned people since it was formed 10 months ago.

Reports claim the Department of Consumer Affairs created the unit because of the number of calls it received after hackers stole personal information about mllions of South Carolina taxpayers from the Department of Revenue almost two years ago.

Consumer Affairs spokeswoman Juliana Harris says the unit sends everyone who calls a guide to identity theft and advice on what to do if they think their information is compromised. Harris says they can't call businesses or others on a victim's behalf.

Republican state Sen. Kevin Bryant of Anderson says the unit is doing exactly what lawmakers wanted when they created it after the hacking incident.
