Ex-SC Speaker Wilkins won't mull DeMint's seat
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former South Carolina House Speaker David Wilkins says he won't consider an appointment to fill a U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jim DeMint.
Wilkins told The Greenville News (http://grnol.co/QTJ6Ri ) he would've considered filling the slot if he could have left it after two years. But Gov. Nikki Haley said Monday she didn't want to appoint a caretaker to the seat and won't make her appointee promise not to run in 2014.
Wilkins says he doesn't want to be appointed and then immediately run for re-election. Haley's appointee will take over through 2014, when an election will be held for the final two years of DeMint's term.
DeMint announced last week he will resign at the end of the year to take over The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.
