SC man accused of killing 2 claims self-defense
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — An Irmo man who prosecutors say killed his wife and a man his sports betting ring owed $20,000 is invoking South Carolina's "stand your ground" shooting law in his defense.
Brett Parker's attorney argued in a court motion Friday he can't be prosecuted under the state law allowing a person who fears for his life to use deadly force.
Attorney Dave Fedor says Brett Parker shot and killed 46-year-old Bryan Capnerhurst after Capnerhurst killed 44-year-old Tammy Parker and then tried to force her husband to empty money from a safe.
The move will delay the trial scheduled to start May 6. Brett Parker could face the death penalty if convicted of double murder.
Prosecutors contend Brett Parker fired all the fatal shots in part to collect insurance on his wife.
