Haley prepares to release SC budget vetoes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is getting ready to issue vetoes for the Legislature's $6.7 billion spending plan.

Haley plans a 4 p.m. news conference Tuesday to discuss her vetoes. She already has signed a bill dealing with one contentious part of the budget — using new revenue and borrowing to raise up to $1 billion for South Carolina's roads and bridges over the next 10 years.

Democrats have urged Haley not to veto $26 million to expand full-day 4-year-old kindergarten. Other targets could include money for the state Arts Commission and Sea Grants Consortium, which the governor has vetoed for the past two years. Those vetoes have been overturned.

The House plans to meet Wednesday to consider the vetoes. The Senate is returning Thursday.
