COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- She won't appoint herself. That's the word from Governor Nikki Haley on filling Jim DeMint's soon to be vacant US Senate seat.
As the South Carolina Republican party comes to comes to terms with the lawmaker's departure, a list of contenders to replace him is quickly taking shape in the midst of a major political shakeup.

The South Carolina GOP is positive about regrouping in the wake of U. S. Senator Jim DeMint's abrupt departure to head the Heritage Foundation. As he steps down December 31 to continue his conservative push outside of Washington, a short list of those here at home who may step in is growing.

They include: Tim Scott, Mick Mulvaney, Jeff Duncan, Trey Gowdy, Joe Wilson, Henry McMaster, and David Wilkins.

One name not in the running is Nikki Haley.

"I want to make two things clear from the outset," Governor Haley said in an official statement. "Number one, I will not take the appointment myself. Number two, I will appoint a person who has the same philosophy of government that Jim DeMint and I share."

Republican Senator John Courson, who has no desire to take the senate seat, says not only is Haley's upcoming choice critical but also are.

"Two years from now, we'll have two U.S. Senate races, a governor's race. The last time that happened was in 1966," said Courson.

The governor's appointment is expected by the end of the year.
