Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) -- Due to an Arctic blast nationwide, the Midlands is seeing its first wind chill advisory conditions in 20 years. Emergency management officials have several recommendations for coping with the cold weather.

Here's what weather, fire, and highway patrol officials urge you to do tonight as we brace for the Midlands first confirmed wind chill advisory in two decades.

"Bundle kids up in the morning 'cause it will be very cold and windy," said Steven Naglic, Disaster Preparedness and Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Columbia.

"Please dial *HP if you see someone broken down on the side of the road," said Sgt. Bob Beres with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. "We don't want anyone sitting in a vehicle for long period of time during these frigid temperatures." State troopers also advise, if you have to be out in the elements, keep a blanket in your car. In case you break down, you can stay warm until help arrives. Thirdly, they say keep a fully charged cell phone nearby if you need to call for help.

The Columbia Fire Department is on stand-by as well during frigid temperatures. They do not advise the use of speaces heaters and the like. However, if you do use them, "don't leave it on overnight or unattended, and keep a three-foot diameter around it, free of any combustible materials."

Other tips include: Layer up to stay warm; gloves and hats help to prevent losing body heat. Keep your thermostat the same day and night. Run water at a trickle level to avoid frozen pipes.

While the frigid temperatures will linger, heavy winds are expected to subside tomorrow afternoon.
