SCE&G Urges Customers to Conserve Energy

Customers can help themselves prevent outages

Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) -- With frigid temperatures expected to continue tonight, South Carolina Electric & Gas officials say 6:00am - 9:00am tomorrow will be critical times and urge customers to conserve wherever possible as to prevent power outages.

They say unplug all non-essential appliances and devices to save energy. Precautions also include setting your indoor thermostat to 69 degrees and leaving it there; using less hot water; and closing up spaces inside your home that may be letting in cold air. They say such conservation will lessen the stress on the electric system and prevent outages, natural or manual, 'rolling' blackouts. That's when officials intentionally cut off customers' power for a period of time to preserve voltage.

At its peak, Tuesday morning's rolling blackout left more than 50,000 people in the dark.
