Same Sex Marriage Takes Center Stage at State House

By Rochelle Dean

Hundreds packed the state house lawn Tuesday evening to rally in support of the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender community as arguments begin in what is known as Proposition 8. A change in the law giving same sex married couples the same rights as those married as a man and a women.

Executive Director for South Carolina Equality, Ryan Wilson and a member of the gay community says he lives with what he calls discrimination first hand.

"My partner and I are married, we were married in Maryland but here in South Carolina, under the law we are considered room mates...we are asking the Supreme Court for the same rights and protection given to other couples."

South Carolina ACLU Executive Director, Victoria Middleton says she agrees calling this issue " a civil rights fight of our time."

Middleton will present her argument in support of same sex marriage equality to the Supreme Court Wednesday.

A decision is not expected to be handed down until sometime in June.
