Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) -- The snow may be over, but the brunt of the storm is yet to come. State Highway Patrol and SCE&G officials share key things to help you prepare for the second half of Winter Storm 2014.

Lt. Kelley Hughes says overnight statewide, there were 817 collisions, compared to 87 during this same time last year. Those numbers could change Wednesday night, though. He warns, packing patience prevents more problems.

"Early morning hours the roads will be very treacherous," said Hughes. "Ice is more treacherous than snow. Beware of shiny spots. Black ice is shinier than the rest of the roadway. If it's dry it'll be more dull. Look for that and keep speeds very, very low. Also, quadruple the normal distances you have between vehicles."

From safety on the roads to safety in your home, South Carolina Electric & Gas officials say the Midlands experienced very few power outages. They attribute that to ongoing tree-trimming efforts, keeping leaves and branches off power lines.

"I know people love their trees but they also love their heat and power," said SCE&G spokesperson, Eric Boomhouer. "When weather turns rough, there's nothing we can do more than trimming trees."

Boomhouer says at its peak, SCE&G serviced eight thousand power outage calls statewide. Even that is low, he says, considering weather like this. Moving into night time hours, work crews remain on standby.

"You can never rule out the possibility of outages. but we have every reason to believe the worst is behind us."

He says they prepare for the worst but hope for the best and advises customers to do the same.
