Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) -- City of Columbia Public Works crews started preparing Monday morning for what's to come. In fact, a new truck and snow plow, purchased last year, didn't see any snow action. But, that's expected to change over the news couple of days.

Some ten miles of major thoroughfares in and out of Columbia city limits are getting sprayed down, first, with a salt water brine mixture and then a salt/sand mixture once the brine stops working, based on just how much snow and ice accumulate.

"That will help melt the snow as well as give some traction," said Sweatt.

The imminent winter blast is causing some division, though, in, at least, the Jackson household.

"I'm ready for snow!" said Caesar Jackson. "I wanna throw a snowball at somebody!"

"We don't agree on anything! I hope it doesn't snow!" said wife, Danetta Jackson.

However, City workers are on one accord. Preparing for two 12-hour shifts, crews were out this morning covering the roads getting ready for a wintry blast expected mid week. Hundreds of tons of salt/sand mixture are on standby. Street Division superintendent Robert Sweatt says nine snow plows, including a new, smaller one, and four sand spreaders are loaded and ready.

"We'll be able to get through this week."

While the City of Columbia focuses on keeping you safe, officials say the biggest thing you can do to safeguard yourself is stay off the road.
