COLUMBIA, S.C., -- South Carolina officials have lifted a statewide red flag alert against outdoor burning.

The state Forestry Commission said Sunday that conditions had improved from a day earlier.

On Saturday, officials implemented the alert due to high winds and low humidity. Those conditions can make it easier for wildfires to start.

During the alert, the Commission says they responded to 51 fires across the state. No injuries were reported.

Officials say the Southeast is still in the midst of wildfire season and caution anyone doing outdoor burning to be very careful. State law requires anyone planning to conduct debris or controlled burns to notify the Commission in advance.
