Rutherford on Navarro: "This is evil intent"

Interim Columbia Police Chief fires back at former captain's allegations

By News Department

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- A lawyer representing Columbia Interim Police Chief Ruben Santiago, filed a civil lawsuit late this afternoon, claiming former Columbia Police Captain Dave Navarro has committed slander, defamation and has intentionally inflicted emotional distress upon his client.

The lawsuit stems from former Columbia Police Captain Dave Navarro's claims of corruption on the part of Santiago. Santiago alleges Navarro was insubordinate and recorded secret conversations in the workplace and fired him because of it. SLED launched an officials probe this week into allegations on both sides. Navarro's lawyers also say the FBI has been contacted but would not confirm to what degree the agency is involved.

Rutherford says his client is prepared to go to court, if necessary, to 'clear his name.'
