WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- An autopsy completed by the Lexington County coroner's office reveals the 43-year-old woman, who authorities say was discovered here on Lumberjack Dr. in West Columbia, died within minutes after being shot in the upper body.

"We're still trying to piece together a lot of the crucial events surrounding the shooting incident," said Maj. John Allard.

What investigators do know, according to Allard, is that a 43-year-old woman was gunned down on Lumberjack Drive, near the intersection of Earline Drive in West Columbia shortly after 11:00 last night, they say, more than likely by someone she was acquainted with.

"We don't know if she met someone there or they drove to that location."

The victim, whom police say has a criminal history of prostitution and drugs, was discovered, bleeding, but still alive, by two tow truck workers on a call to repossess a vehicle in the area. They were by her side until EMS arrived. Authorities say this wasn't a random act.
Neighbors are on edge.

"I was surprised. It's been a long time since i heard anything like that," said Brad Barrette.

"That's scary. i can barely take my children outside," said Jessica Goodwin.

Authorities are not releasing the victim's name until her relatives have been notified. Meanwhile they say if you or anyone you know has any information, please call the Lexington County Sheriff's Department or Crimestoppers at 1-888-crime-sc.
