City Water Rates Increase: Officials host workshops for customers

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)--City of Columbia Water and Sewer Customers will see a new flyer this month about the City's proposed change to water and sewer rates.

To help customers understand these rate changes, the City's Customer Care Center at 1136 Washington St. will also host a series of extended hours and Saturday workshops.

The Customer Care Center will extend its hours until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th, Thursday, April 18th, Monday, April 22nd and Wednesday, April 24th. Customer Care staff will be on hand to help customers with their billing questions.

Saturday Workshops will also be held on April 20th from 8:30 a.m. to noon, June 8th from 8:30 3 p.m. and June 22 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Workshops will feature informational sessions on how the rate restructure will affect customers' bills and ways customers can conserve water to reduce their bills.

On March 26, 2013, City Council approved a water and sewer rate restructure that will go into effect on May 1, 2013. Water and sewer customers can expect to see the change with their June bills. Four changes to the City's water and sewer rates were approved.

· Water base rates will go down for customers with 1" or larger meters.

· Water customers with dual meters will be charged the base water rate of the large meter in lieu of both meters.

· Sewer customers with dual meters will be charged the base sewer rate of the smaller meter in lieu of the larger meter.

· Volumetric rates will increase for all water and sewer customers by 7.96%.
