Pitching a Ball Park

By Rochelle Dean

It's an issue that has Columbia talking and asking a ton of questions as city council gets one step closer to voting on a ball park that would bring a minor league team to the Capitol City.

Mayor Steve Benjamin has been holding a series of informational sessions to allow the public a chance to find out as much as they can about the 180 acre venue before council members bring up to bat.

During the 8th meeting held at Columbia City Hall, The mayor took questions from residents in attendance and those who sent their concerns via twitter.

Some wanted to know more about parking and traffic and whether or not the Bull Street Corridor could accommodate the the approximately 2 thousand cars the roughly 35 million dollar project could bring.
An independent consulting firm who did a study of the area says yes. According to them, most of the events and games would take place no later than 7pm. Well pass rush hour giving people the ability to get in and around the area.

Another common question was how the project would be paid for. According to the Mayor. The goal is to make this a private/public venture with most of the funds coming from private entities. Ultimately meaning there will be no increase to taxpayers if the project is approved.

City Council members plan to take up the issue for a first ready at their next City Council meeting Tuesday at 6pm. The Chief Financial officer will also lay out funding options available for the plan.
