Escaped Mental Health Patient Fighting Extradition

By Eric Weisfeld

Columbia, SC (WOLO)- The extradition process of an escaped Columbia mental health patient, will soon involve The Governor's Office. "The Department Of Mental Health" confirms that Jason Carter did *not* waive extradition back to South Carolina.
Meaning, he has not agreed to return here from Tennessee. Carter remains jailed in Tennessee after he reportedly stole a Department Of Mental Health van and escaped from outside The Craft-Farrow Hospital here in Columbia, earlier this month.
Carter was committed there after he was acquitted, by reason of insanity, in the 2006 deaths of his mother and step-father.
at the time of his escape, Carter was taking part in a patient work program... which has since been suspended.
Also today we learned the van he is accused of stealing was found on North Main Street here in Columbia last wednesday.
as for his extradition, we're told efforts are underway involving SLED and mental health officials but, eventually the Governor's Office will have to step in.
