(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., --

Former Governor Mark Sanford appeared on a Sunday morning talk show, opening up about what he says he's learned since a cheating scandal that cost him his marriage and jeopardized his career.

The Representative elect is now back in political graces after winning the South's first Congressional District seat, but he says it didn't come without a lot of soul searching.

Sanford says during that period in his life he learned a lot about judgement, faith and forgiveness.

"Do the events of your life refine or define you? I think in politics you know, people want to take an event and make it definitional to your life. I think that any of these valley's or any of those bumps we hit in the road of life either by circumstance or by own action, can be refining points."
