RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) -- There is a unique opportunity for people to support the Richland County Sheriff’s Department while remembering Fargo, a K-9 officer who paid the ultimate sacrifice on December 16, 2011.

Sheriff Leon Lott announced that the Richland County Sheriff’s Foundation now has available K9 Fargo Dog Tags and Key Chains for sale beginning Friday, June 21, 2013. The sheriff added that the dog tags will be available at all Midlands Area Taco Bells, on line at or by email at

Fargo was shot and killed after capturing an armed robbery suspect near Monticello Road in North Columbia. Fargo caught the subject, locked onto him and during the ensuing struggle the man shot Fargo three times, and then fired at responding deputies. K9 Fargo was transported to a local emergency animal hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The suspect fled but was located hiding in a shed and arrested a short time later. Fargo was Master Deputy Warren Cavanagh’s partner and was a Belgian Malinois who joined our family in 2006 at the early age of 9 months. K-9 Fargo was triple wielded in Narcotics detection, Tracking, and Criminal Apprehension. Master Deputy Cavanagh and K-9 Fargo prided themselves in making the communities of Richland County a safer place to live, work and play. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that these new unique Dog Tags are being sold by the Richland County Sheriff’s Foundation which was founded to care for those who protect our communities.

The Foundation’s website talks about its purpose: “Richland County deputies risk their lives daily. They protect people and property, often under adverse conditions. Providing equipment when it is needed, rather than when dollars become available was, and still is, The Richland County Sheriff's Foundation's primary goal. The match of dollars to needs isn't always perfectly timed. And the time lost attempting to obtain equipment can cost the lives of law enforcement officers.”

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that the Foundation supports the Department, through fundraising and donations, often stepping in to help deputies and their families in the event of crisis and general need. Fargo tags are $15 each and the money will go to support the Foundation’s efforts to provide for those who protect our communities

Join K9 deputies and their K9 partners June 22, 2013, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM K9 at Midlands Area Taco Bells to interact with the public and promote this project. The sheriff added that the dog tags will be available at the following locations:
