Secretary of Veterans Affairs at Dorn VA
(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., --
" trust is the foundation of everything we do here at the va."
But it's confidence in a broken system that will take action to repair instead of talk according acting secretary of Veterans Affairs, Sloan Gibson.
05:40:46 " i don't think anyone thinks it will be given back. we are going to have to earn it back and in some cases one veteran at a time."
Nearly 5 months after reported cases of willful misconduct and management negligence at veterans affairs installations across the country - Secretary Gibson says the dorn va is on par - if not better than other locations - but it's not yet at it's best.
In order to make that happen changes are being implemented. including digitizing disability claims which has now cut the backlog by 57 percent. consults are being tracked daily- and room for 17 hundred additional spaces for new patient appointments are being created in order to get veterans off the waiting list and in to see a doctor.
While senior executive bonuses have been suspended for this year. it's a good start - but Gibson says
more physicians will need to be hired to meet demand, whistle blower retaliation has to be stopped, and an easier way for veterans to obtain information about their claims needs to be created.
most importantly secretary gibson says there has to be more transparency within the department and accountability to go along with it.
