School officials sent a letter home to parents alerting them of the alleged incident they say took place Friday. According to school officials, a security guard hired to help keep the school safe accidentally left his unloaded gun on a shelf in the bathroom.

School officials say none of the children in the k-8 charter school ever came into contact with the gun. Meanwhile parents of one of the children who attends the school says they know "humans make mistakes, but this was a big mistake."

School officials say they plan to refine their procedures and added " we regret this unfortunate incident and are striving to provide the safest learning environment for our children."
