Shoppers May Soon Pay Sales Tax Online

By News Department

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNN) - You may soon have to pay sales tax on many of your internet purchases.

The senate voted 69 to 27 to approve a bill and pave the way for the Marketplace Fairness Act.

That law would require online-only retailers like Amazon and Overstock to collect a tax in 45 states, including South Carolina, and DC.

This could level the playing field for brick and mortar stores by requiring online retailers to also enforce the tax.

The bill now goes to the House.

The president has endorsed the bill so if it gains approval in the House, it will likely become law.
