(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., --

It was a speech lasting less than a hour, but one many city residents say left them feeling inspired about the direction the city is headed in the next four years.

Mayor Steve Benjamin spoke of some of the accomplishments made over his last term, including the reduction of violent crime by 24 percent, it's lowest point in 5 years, an expansion of the gang unit, and four straight years of a city surplus. But admits told a crowd gathered inside the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, this is only the beginning.

Starting with a host of new initiatives, and ways to continue growing the city's tax base.

Besides the move on the Bull Street project that will house a year round entertainment venue, The Mayor says he also plans to push for tougher legislation during this session that will create a bond referendum to help continue cutting down on crime by repeat offenders.
