Charleston, SC (WOLO)-- Former Governor Mark Sanford says he was watching the Super Bowl with his son when he was accused of trespassing at his wife's property.

In a statement released Wednesday Sanford says he went to the house to watch the second half of the game with his 14-year- old son because he did not want him to watch it alone.

He says he attempted to contact his ex-wife Jenny Sanford but was unable to reach her.

The couple's divorce settlement reportedly says neither may enter the other's home without permission.

Mark Sanford is running for the state's 1st Congressional District seat.

The former governor also said he is particularly curious how records that were sealed to avoid his children dealing with embarrassment are now somehow exposed less than three weeks before the election.
